Featuring film maker, Joe Rea-Dickins

Joe is a true exploratory kayaker, having racked up countless Himalayan first descents where nobody else dared, from Afghanistan all the way to Bangladesh. Now a guidebook writer and aerial videographer, he’s even got his pilot’s license (though his aircraft is sadly too small for shuttles). Author of Meghalaya Rivers Book.

At age eighteen, Joe headed to India to work as a journalist for the New Indian Express, and with that his love affair with India began. After a second gap year, Joe moved to Aberystwyth, a secluded Welsh town to study international politics. In his second year of studies he was selected for the British Universities Kayak Expedition team and travelled to Venezuela for his first taste of expedition kayaking. In the years since graduating from university, Joe has spent almost as much time in South Asia as he has in Europe. Joe has raised money for women’s education in Northern Pakistan through the release of two British-made kayak films High and Too High. He has working in Delhi as a video editor for the Outdoor Journal, India’s first International active-lifestyle and adventure magazine. Joe shot, edited and directed The All India Kayak expedition, a six-month rolling expedition to explore many un-paddled rivers in India. In 2016, Joe was part of a team that kayaked the Panjshir river in Afghanistan. They paddled around 130 km of whitewater in this war-torn area and, since the trip, have raised awareness about the unique and often-misunderstood region. Now in the UK, Joe runs an aerial-photography business while formulating grand plans for more expiatory trips to far-flung locations.

You’ll find him seeking out the finest whitewater the world has to offer in Norway, slashing turns on empty waves in the north of Scotland and capturing kayakers on film in the most beautiful and innovative ways.

Joe will be sharing his experience as a whitewater kayaker & filmmaker at the 2024 NPFF, as well as joining us for the North American premiere of his film, The River of Mirrors:

The River of Mirrors is a paddlesports vision reimagined to create a world first cinematic experience that looks beyond adrenaline and ego. A love letter to water, a kayak film unlike any other.

Featuring film maker, Justin Harris

Justin Harris is a photographer, media director, and documentary filmmaker living deep in the mountains of West Virginia. He is an avid whitewater kayaker and skier and began his career in action sports photography as a photo boater on the Upper Yough. His exploration into video production came during his tenure as the Media Director of a small West Virginia ski resort. Over the last three years Justin has carved a niche in the Mid Atlantic whitewater scene through a river report video series documenting the elusive Class IV-V steep creeks of his home state. In his first short film, The Red Creek Sessions, he showcases the fabled Red Creek in the Dolly Sods Wilderness, as well as the world class creeking of the Cheat River Watershed and the geology that created it.  The Red Creek Sessions won the 2023 National Paddling Film Festival’s Accomplished film division as well as the coveted Viewer’s Choice Award.

Justin will be joining NPFF 2024 to share his experience as a whitewater kayaker & filmmaker, as well as premiering a new version of his film, Freeland ~ A Blackwater Story:

Freeland ~ A Blackwater Story takes a look at the past, present, and future of the Blackwater River and the whitewater culture that has developed around it.  Through in-depth interviews with the whitewater pioneers of the 80's and 90's who first ran the Upper Blackwater, to the present day leaders of the community, this documentary explores the generational passing that naturally occurs within a river culture, as well as the sport's deep relationship with the nordic ski community, located 5 miles upstream of the whitewater section, at the iconic White Grass Ski Area.
